Elsa after more G3 glory in Florida Oaks

Racenews

Three-year-old filly Elsa goes for a second G3 victory on turf in the Florida Oaks over an extended mile at Tampa Bay Downs, USA, on Saturday, 9 March.

The daughter of Animal Kingdom, who is trained by Michael Stidham, ran on strongly after being held up to gain an impressive win in the mile G3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar in November.

She has made one subsequent appearance, coming home a clear second to Winter Sunset in the Shantel Lanerie Memorial Overnight Stakes over a mile at Fair Grounds on Saturday, 9 March.

Elsa, drawn in stall four and ridden by Joe Bravo, faces 10 other three-year-old fillies including the re-opposing Winter Sunset, G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf third Stellar Agent and La Feve, a G3 winner in France last year.

Michael Stidham reported: “Elsa came out of her last race in good shape and has been training forwardly going into this contest.

“I think a combination of things got her beat last time – the track was a little tricky as the rail was far out and the better part of the turf was on the outside of the course. She was kept out wide and the winner got a jump on her on the home turn, so we weren’t able to run her down.

“We are coming up against Winter Sunset again, while there are a couple of others in the race who should make it a solid G3 contest.”
