Dubai Icon pours it on at Meydan

Racenews

Dubai Icon produced a relentless display of galloping as he made virtually all for a comprehensive win in a 10-furlong rated conditions race on dirt at Meydan, UAE, on Friday, 21 January.

The son of New Approach, runner-up over the same course and distance in last season’s Listed Curlin Stakes, raced in a close second leaving the stalls before sneaking up the inside rail to take up the running from Desert Peace after the first furlong and a half.

Dubai Icon continued to dictate under Pat Cosgrave and the Saeed bin Suroor-trained six-year-old increased his advantage in the straight, passing the line a full eight and a half lengths clear of Remorse. Big Team took third, a further nine lengths in arrears.

Pat Cosgrave said: “Dubai Icon wasn’t beaten a million miles in the Godolphin Mile last year and he is much better over 10 furlongs. We had a nice draw today in stall one – I was actually going to let James Doyle lead on Desert Peace and then I let Dubai Icon roll along.

“I thought the race was over very quickly from a long way down, It’s only a rated conditions race but I thought he was very impressive. He finished upsides Real World in the Curlin Stakes last year and it was a smart performance today.”
