Desmond challenge for Zorion

Racenews

Zorion steps up to G3 level for the Desmond Stakes over a mile at Leopardstown, Ireland, on Thursday, 16 August.

The four-year-old colt, who is trained by Jim Bolger, was last seen out when fifth in the Listed Celebration Stakes over a mile at the Curragh on 30 June. He was the head winner of the Listed Glencairn Stakes over tomorrow’s course and distance on 7 June and was also successful in a seven-furlong handicap at Leopardstown on 13 May.

Kevin Manning takes the ride, with Zorion set to face eight rivals including G3 Amethyst Stakes winner Zihba, G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas fourth Threeandfourpence and Listed scorer Masaarr.

Jimmy Hyland of Godolphin said: “Zorion’s best form is on this track. He is already a two-time winner at Leopardstown and was also Listed-placed there as a three-year-old in the 2,000 Guineas Trial.

“The ground should suit and, although he is stepping up in class, we expect him to be competitive and are hoping for a good run.”
