Cymric among Godolphin trio for fifth Carnival card

Godolphin has three runners during this week’s Dubai World Cup Carnival fixture at Meydan, UAE, on Thursday, February 2.

Cymric and American Hope both line up in the EGA Potlines Trophy Handicap over a mile on turf (19.05hrs local time).

Four-year-old Cymric (Charlie Appleby/William Buick) finished a close second to Ultra in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp, France, as a juvenile and the son of Kitten’s Joy makes his handicap debut following five appearances in Listed and Pattern company last year.

Charlie Appleby reported: “Cymric has been gelded since his last run and has settled in nicely to his new surroundings.

“This is his first run for me, so it will be something of a fact-finding mission, but I have been pleased with his work.

“He has ticked every box so far and we are looking forward to getting him on the course. If he can rekindle some of his juvenile form, he will be a serious player on Thursday.”

American Hope (Saeed bin Suroor/Adrie de Vries) captured a seven-furlong turf handicap in March during last year’s Dubai World Cup Carnival.

The six-year-old, on his first start since, finished down the field in a similar handicap on January 5 in which he raced a bit keenly initially and was squeezed out in the straight.

American Hope is drawn on the outside of the eight runners, while Cymric breaks from stall one on the inside.

Also on Thursday’s card, Red Galileo (Saeed bin Suroor/Christophe Soumillon) is out to build on a winning seasonal return as he steps up to two miles for the first time in the turf EGA Casthouse Trophy Handicap (20.15hrs local time).

The six-year-old son of Dubawi rallied gamely for a neck success over Carbon Dating in a 14-furlong handicap on turf at the same course on January 12, his first appearance for 15 months.

Red Galileo, drawn in stall eight, takes on Carbon Dating again and seven others.
