‘Counter’ gallop live in Kentucky: Appleby likes what he sees

Cross Counter impressed trainer Charlie Appleby in his last serious piece of work at Werribee before his attempt to win Godolphin a first G1 Melbourne Cup.

Appleby, currently in Kentucky, watched the workout live on FaceTime and spoke to jockey Kerrin McEvoy soon after.

The gelding showed no signs of being affected by the cut leg that briefly interrupted his preparation earlier in the month.

He finished strongly over the final stages, galloping through the line with plenty in hand as he got the better of stablemate Folkswood.

“They went six furlongs (1,200m), coming home the last two (400m). He stretched out nicely and I was pleased.

“Kerrin was very happy with him. One more little bit on Saturday and he will be ready to go,” he added.

Cross Counter wore winkers (cheek pieces) in the gallop.

“The whole idea was to sharpen him mentally. The headgear will come off in the Cup. I have never been concerned about his fitness levels.

“He was race fit when he shipped to Australia,” he said
