Bold Act leaves it late in G3 Sycamore Stakes

Racenews

Bold Act produced a storming late kick to post the biggest win of his career in the G3 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland, USA, on Friday, 13 October.

Taking on older opposition for the first time, the Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old had to be rousted by Jamie Spencer following a sluggish break before finding cover in seventh.

Cellist and Channel Maker looked to stretch the field leaving the back, with Bold Act briefly hitting a flat spot before staying on at the top of the straight.

The son of New Approach disputed fifth entering the final furlong but surged home after being switched out, collaring Cellist near the line for a three-quarter length success.

Jamie Spencer said: “Bold Act got a bit strong going past the winning post the first time, so I had to take my medicine, get him down to the fence and get him to relax. From the half-mile pole, you are gambling – you are going through the gears and hoping that the gaps will open.

“I got lucky in the straight. I don’t normally punch the air after the line, but I knew I got lucky and the horse got me out of trouble. It’s a good team effort from everyone to get him here.”
