Barney Roy & Magny Cours edged out in Bahrain thriller

Racenews

Lord Glitters collared Barney Roy and Magny Cours in the final strides as the Godolphin duo filled the places in an exhilarating G3 Bahrain International Trophy at Sakhir on Friday, 19 November.

In a contest that featured four Godolphin runners, Barney Roy raced freely in mid-division alongside Zakouski early on, with Magny Cours held up towards the rear and Dubai Future settling a close second on the outside of the pace-setting Pogo.

Magny Cours made headway around the field turning in and quickened powerfully after being switched widest of all by Mickael Barzalona in the straight.

Barney Roy also stayed on strongly under James Doyle and moved up to dispute the running with Magny Cours as Pogo and Dubai Future faded approaching the final furlong.

The two looked set to fight out the finish, only for this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates Airline winner Lord Glitters to swoop late and hit the front in the shadow of the post.

Charlie Appleby said: “We are delighted with Barney Roy. He travelled round with his usual exuberance and stayed at it all the way to the line. It was a race that played into the hands of Lord Glitters but we are very pleased with how our horse ran.

“Barney Roy will ship to Dubai now and we can look towards a winter programme for him at Meydan again.”
