Rio De La Plata proved to be a top-class performer for Saeed bin Suroor over several seasons; he was a high-class 2yo with his three victories that season including the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, but although he didn't win again until the age of five, he ran some fine races at the top level including when finishing second in the French 2000 Guineas and third in the Prix Jean Prat as a 3yo; he proved that he was still very capable as a 5yo with his five victories including two at Group 1 level in Italy; he continued to run well at the highest level as a 6yo, including finishing fourth to Canford Cliffs in the Queen Anne, third to Frankel in the Sussex Stakes and runner-up to Excelebration in the Prix du Moulin; only failed by a narrow margin to win the Group 1 Premio Roma for the second time; effective from 7f to 1m2f, he acted on any ground and became one of Godolphin's real standard bearers; retired to stud
