Trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland; unbeaten in six starts at two; won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes before joining Godolphin and taking the Group 1 Vincent O'Brien Stakes (formerly National Stakes) and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes; made impressive reappearance at three, taking the Group 1 2,000 Guineas by 5l, but pulled much too hard when stepped up to 1m4f in the Epsom Derby and failed to run his race, being eased to finish last; that performance was soon put in the shade, however, when he successfully returned to 1m in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, just prevailing following a thrilling duel with Toronado; lost out to that colt in another close contest for the Group 1 Sussex Stakes in July; proved too keen again when turned out quickly in outstanding renewal of Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August, and scoped badly afterwards; gave his all but found the ground too testing when only fourth on his final outing in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
