Coroebus collared close home in G2 Royal Lodge Stakes

Racenews

Coroebus was caught in the shadow of the post in a remarkable finish to the mile G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, UK, on Saturday, 25 September.

The Dubawi colt, stepping up in class for Charlie Appleby following a debut success on Newmarket’s July Course in August, soon tracked Royal Patronage in second of the seven runners on the far rail.

Coroebus cruised up for William Buick to take up the running over three furlongs from home and bounded clear after kicking on in the dip, opening up a four-length advantage passing the furlong-pole.

Royal Patronage rallied strongly inside the final half-furlong, getting up on the line for a neck success, with the front two pulling two and a half lengths clear of third home Unconquerable.

Charlie Appleby said: “It was slightly frustrating to get beaten on the line but Coroebus has shown plenty of potential on his first start in Pattern company. He has not lost anything in defeat and, depending on how he comes out of the race, we might look towards the G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster.”
