Tempted lights up Randwick in G2 win, Everest return beckons
Brilliant filly Tempted has produced an explosive Group Two Arrowfield 3YO Sprint win that is destined to carry her through to a second appearance in Australia’s richest race.
Confirming her status as the country’s premier three-year-old sprinting filly, Tempted (Street Boss) built on an unblemished 2026 record to capture one of the main support races over two days of The Championships at Randwick on Saturday, 11 April.
She stopped the clock in a class record 1:08.00 for 1,200m, closing to within a half-second of the Randwick track record in a performance that underlined her elite credentials.
Tempted is now unbeaten in three starts this year and is unconquered since finishing second in the G1 Everest at Randwick in October.
The Everest looms large again as Tempted’s primary spring target and trainer Ciaron Maher said consultation with Godolphin Australia’s management team would determine the filly’s path to the 1,200m sprint.
“She keeps getting better each prep and her manners keep improving each time she goes to the races. She’s going to be a lot of fun,” Maher said.
“It was pretty thrilling to watch (on Saturday), she’s just got a brilliant turn of foot, doesn’t she?”
Jockey Chad Schofield, who is forming a potent combination with Tempted, gave the filly time to find her feet from an awkward barrier.
He allowed the filly to settle in a midfield position before slipping her additional rein at the top of the straight.
In advancing her record to seven wins and four placings from 12 starts, Tempted joined in quickly and had the race in her keeping at the 200m before scoring a clear-cut 1-1/4 win.
Schofield said the filly’s versatility and acceleration made her a rare ride.
“She can be wherever you want her to be. It’s really breathtaking and feels amazing to be on top.”
Tempted gave Godolphin its second Arrowfield 3YO Sprint win in recent seasons, with Aft Cabin winning the designated Championship race in 2023.
Earlier, Diameter (Brazen Beau) delivered on the assessment of champion trainer Chris Waller in winning the Listed Fernhill Mile for two-year-olds.
Relishing an increase in distance to 1,600m, Diameter made his own luck on the speed under jockey Tommy Berry in winning by a length.
Waller trained Brazen Beau for two G1 victories and a champion 3YO colt title in 2014/15, and was delighted Diameter opened the second day of The Championships in style
“Brazen Beau, we know a bit about (the progeny) and (Diameter) has always shown us that he'll get a mile, so it gave us the confidence to press towards this race,” Waller said
Out of the Street Cry mare Circular, Diameter is a half-brother to the G1 VRC Newmarket Handicap winner and now Darley stallion Cylinder.
He gave Godolphin its third Fernhill win in the past four editions, following in the hoofsteps of Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) in 2023 and Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot) in 2024.
