Symbol Of Honour third in G2 Hungerford Stakes

Symbol Of Honour’s experiment over seven furlongs produced mixed results as he kept on after briefly being outpaced to take third in the G2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, UK, on Saturday, 15 August. 

The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old had finished second at Listed level over the trip as a juvenile before scaling greater heights in sprints, winning the 2025 G2 Sandy Lane Stakes and last month’s G3 Hackwood Stakes. 

Having found cover in fifth of the nine runners, William Buick tracked Coppull when the leader switched towards the far rail nearing the halfway point, with Back In Black also joining the duo away from the main field. 

Coppull kicked away from his rivals two furlongs out as Symbol Of Honour appeared one-paced approaching the final furlong. The Godolphin runner lost his position before rallying to regain third close home, going down by two lengths in total. 

Charlie Appleby said: “Symbol Of Honour travelled into the race nicely but then seemed to get caught flat-footed before staying on again. We are hoping to take him back out to Dubai and this gives us the option of heading down the seven-furlong route for something like the Al Fahidi Fort or dropping back to sprinting.”
