Speaker’s Corner second best in G2 John A Nerud Stakes

Racenews

Speaker's Corner had the misfortune of bumping into another superstar performer for a second consecutive start, this time going down by five lengths to Life Is Good in the G2 John A Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park, USA, on Saturday, 2 July.

The Bill Mott-trained colt, dropping back to seven furlongs after finishing third behind Flightline in the G1 Met Mile, showed good speed from the gates and soon stalked Life Is Good as the duo went clear from the start.

Speaker’s Corner was unable to press Life Is Good for the lead turning in, with this year’s Dubai World Sponsored By Emirates Airline fourth readily drawing clear at the top of the straight. The Godolphin four-year-old kept on under Jose Ortiz to finish two and a half lengths clear of Repo Rocks.

Jose Ortiz said: “Speaker's Corner ran good. Life Is Good is a very nice horse. I was going to apply some pressure going to the second quarter. I did, but Life Is Good was the better horse. He just couldn’t keep up and ran evenly the whole time.”
