Sovereignty back with a vengeance in outstanding Whitney display

A return to Saratoga produced a spectacular return to form for Sovereignty as North America’s reigning Horse of the Year stormed to victory in a star-studded Whitney Stakes at the course on Saturday.

Beaten on his first two appearances as a four-year-old, the Kentucky Derby hero showed the brilliance that saw him sweep the Belmont, Jim Dandy and Travers at the Spa last year with a dominant win over champion filly Nitrogen.

Sovereignty’s end-of-season target is the Breeders’ Cup Classic at the end of October, a race he was forced to miss last year due to a fever. He looks set to face the 2025 winner Forever Young beforehand in a stellar renewal of the Jockey Club Gold Cup on the opening day of Belmont Park’s Fall Meet.

Having been placed in both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, Distant Storm capitalised on the drop down to G3 level with a cosy success in the Prix Daphnis at Deauville on Sunday. The Night Of Thunder colt, who has yet to finish out of the first three in seven career starts, looks set to step back up in class and could tackle a mile and a quarter on his next appearance.

Evergreen campaigner Dubai Future continues to defy his years, with the 10-year-old running a fine race to finish a close third in the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin in Germany on Sunday. Stablemate Tornado Alert was a head further back in fourth on his first start for more than a year, and he looks set to tackle more G1 assignments in the autumn.

Farhh mare Tiffany took the spoils in the Grosser Preis von Berlin and an excellent weekend for Darley stallions also saw Blue Point’s son Samangan capture Prix Maurice de Gheest and Too Darn Hot colt Glacius take the Saratoga Derby on the Whitney Stakes undercard.

Pyromancer made a pleasing return to action as he was caught on the line to finish a head second in Sunday’s G3 Leopard Stakes at Niigata. It was a first appearance since finishing third in the G2 UAE Derby for the Pyro colt, who is expected to improve for the run.

Lukewarm continued an exciting start to her career at the same course on Saturday, with the Too Darn Hot homebred maintaining her unbeaten record with a course-record victory in a Stakes race.

Rebel’s Romance may have recently retired, but his three-year-old full-brother Fortitudine took his first steps in potentially filling the void left by Godolphin’s most successful horse when scoring by a full 21 lengths on his debut at Kempton Park.

Desert Castle also made an impressive introduction with a decisive victory at Newmarket on Friday, a performance that saw the full-brother to Dream Castle emerge as a potential candidate for next year’s Classics.
