Royal Power overcame a year-long absence to post a career-best victory in the Listed Abu Dhabi Championship on Saturday, 7 February.

The five-year-old brought a consistent profile into the 12-furlong contest, having won or placed on five of his six previous appearances, and was making his first start since beating subsequent G1 winner El Cordobes at last season's Dubai Racing Carnival.

Covered up behind the leaders in fourth, Royal Power made good headway after being switched out by William Buick entering the home straight and stayed on well to take up the running from Green Cape over a furlong out.

West Wind Blows made late gains but never looked like challenging Royal Power, with the Charlie Appleby-trained runner finding plenty in front for a comfortable two-length verdict.

William Buick said: “Royal Power beat El Cordobes in a Meydan handicap exactly a year ago, and El Cordobes has gone to prove himself at the highest level in America.

“The big question mark was the long layoff, but we knew that he had the class and the track here seemed to suit him. I was very pleased with his performance and hopefully he will keep going the right way.”
