No stopping Maho Bay in G3 Winter Hill Stakes
Maho Bay earned himself a possible trip to North America with an all-the-way success in the G3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor, UK, on Monday, 7 September.
The Dubawi colt had met trouble in running when finishing a close fifth on his previous start in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot but was sent on by William Buick this time into a length lead.
Maho Bay appeared to have all six of his rivals under pressure approaching the final quarter-mile and asserted his advantage in the closing stages to score by two and a half lengths over Venetian Prince.
Trainer Charlie Appleby said: “It was great to see Maho Bay get back to winning ways. We had pencilled him in for the G2 Jockey Club Derby at Belmont in November and we will look towards that race next.”
William Buick added: “Maho Bay will be a lovely horse for next year and I liked what he did today. That’s probably the tactics we should have used at Ascot and I thought he showed plenty of promise. He has opened up plenty of options with today’s win.”
