Knightsbridge aces Pacific Classic to set up Breeders’ Cup conundrum

Knightsbridge continued his sensational summer as he registered a breakthrough G1 win with an outstanding display in the Pacific Classic in Southern California on Saturday.
Having registered the highest Beyer Speed Figure in four years when taking the G3 Monmouth Cup in July, the Nyquist entire excelled on his first start over a mile and a quarter as he powered to a six-and-a-quarter length verdict in the Del Mar feature.
The winner of the Pacific Classic receives an automatic place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, although Sovereignty remains the leading royal blue contender for that race following his emphatic victory in the Whitney Stakes earlier this month.
Sovereignty, who worked at Saratoga on Friday, will run in next month’s Jockey Club Gold Cup, and plans for the Breeders’ Cup will be finalised afterwards. Knightsbridge, who represents the same trainer/jockey combination of Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado, could alternatively drop back in trip for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
Notable Speech will also be heading to Keeneland at the end of October to defend his title in the Breeders’ Cup Mile after the Eclipse Award winner brought up a sixth G1 success with an impressive display in Saturday’s City Of York Stakes.
All five of his previous top-level wins had come over a mile on quick ground, but the Dubawi entire had no issue with softer conditions or the drop to seven furlongs at York. He will be freshened up for Keeneland, where he will attempt to provide Godolphin with a fifth Breeders’ Cup Mile in the space of six years.
Rain-softened ground counted against Ombudsman in Wednesday’s Juddmonte International as he could only finish fourth behind younger rival Item. The four-time G1 winner could be on his travels later in the season as well in search of quicker conditions.
Nauset had finished second on her debut at Niigata at the start of the month and the Fine Needle two-year-old returned to the same course to take a maiden by seven lengths on Sunday. Curlicue graduated to Stakes honours on the same day as she scored on dirt at Chukyo.
