John O'Shea (Australia)

John O’Shea joined Godolphin as the principal trainer in Australia in 2014, the latest chapter in a successful career that began with just five horses back in 1999.

Growing up in Queensland Australia, in 1995 John took the decision to move to Sydney to learn from one of Australia’s greatest trainers, Tommy Smith. Stints with Smith’s daughter Gai Waterhouse, Gary Moore and the legendary Bart Cummings followed over the next four years, as the aspiring handler gained valuable experience with the country’s premier training operations.

John set up on his own in the Sydney suburb of Warwick Farm with a handful of horses in 1999 and enjoyed success with Grey And Gold, who won the Group Two Villiers Stakes in December, 2000, and talented stayer Mushtak. Many victories have followed in Australia and high-profile Hong Kong races. John saddled his first Group One winner for Godolphin in February 2015 when Contributer landed the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm.

John divides his time between Godolphin stables at Crown Lodge and Osborne Park in Sydney and Carbine Lodge in Melbourne.
