James Cummings was appointed as a Godolphin trainer in May 2017, after almost a decade at Leilani Lodge at Randwick in Sydney as Foreman, Co-Trainer with his grandfather Bart Cummings, and ultimately as Head Trainer.
Cummings is a fourth-generation racehorse trainer in the Cummings dynasty, following in the footsteps of great grandfather Jim, grandfather Bart and father Anthony.
James began working as a stable hand for his father when he was 13-years-old and his love affair for the racing game only grew from there. In 2009, James became Foreman at Leilani Lodge under the tutelage of his grandfather Bart.
James was granted his New South Wales Metropolitan Trainer’s license in 2013 and after four years spent entered into a training partnership with Bart on August 1 2013.
After Bart’s passing in 2015, James continued to train at Leilani Lodge, carrying on the extraordinary legacy of one of racing’s greatest ambassadors.
James Cummings has made the perfect start to his new role as Godolphin’s Australian head trainer with his first runner in the royal blue silks coming home a winner, and landed his first Group 1 winner just three months into his new role, when Alizee took out the Flight Stakes at Royal Randwick on 30 September 2017.
James' most recent winner at the highest level was Alizee who was very impressive when taking out the G1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Royal Randwick on 14 April 2018.
