THE GRAND PRIX DE PARIS

The Grand Prix de Paris, one of the most important races in France outside the Classics, was first run in 1863, which is 27 years after the Prix du Jockey-Club (France’s Derby) was instituted.

THE DARLEY IRISH OAKS

The Irish Oaks at the Curragh was first run in 1895, 29 years after the inaugural Irish Derby, with the Classic being won by Sapling.

THE DARLEY JULY CUP

The July Cup, run over six furlongs at Newmarket, is the highlight of the historic three-day July Meeting at the headquarters of British Flat racing.

THE FALMOUTH STAKES

Established in 1911, the Falmouth Stakes is run in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth (1819-89), one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883, including the Derby winners Kingscraft (1870) and Silvio (1877).

THE DEUTSCHES DERBY

It was only as recently as 1993 that the BMW Deutsches Derby, Germany's Derby run at Hamburg racecourse, was opened up to foreign-bred runners but, despite no shortage of overseas challengers since then, there has yet to be a non German-bred winner.

THE CORAL ECLIPSE STAKES

One of Sandown Park's founders, General Owen Williams, decided that the British course should stage a top-class race in order to preserve its position as a "drawing room" racecourse - one that was suitable for women and children.
