Dubai Millennium recorded a six-length victory in 2000

The US$10-million Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest race, was established to raise Dubai’s global profile and turn the country into a premier racing venue, both of which objectives have been achieved with great success.

THE DUBAI SHEEMA CLASSIC

The US$5-million Dubai Sheema Classic, inaugurated in 1998, was promoted to Group One status in 2002. The 12-furlong race was run at Nad Al Sheba up to last year.

THE DUBAI DUTY FREE

The US$5-million Dubai Duty Free started out as a 10-furlong race on dirt before being switched to the turf in 2000 when it was run over a furlong less.

THE DUBAI GOLDEN SHAHEEN

The first two runnings of what is now the Dubai Golden Shaheen in 1993 and 1994 happened in the month of December and the sprint was then transferred to the initial Dubai World Cup day in 1996.

THE HONG KONG SPRINT

The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint was first staged in 1999 and is therefore a recent addition to the international racing scene.

THE HONG KONG VASE

The HK$14-million (around US$1.8 million) Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase is the longest of all the Hong Kong International races, being run over 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Sha Tin racecourse.

THE HONG KONG MILE

The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile takes place at Sha Tin racecourse, Hong Kong, and is the richest eight-furlong race in the world with a prize fund of HK$16 million (around US$2.1 million).
